WELCOME TO ESOF2008’S FIFTH NEWSLETTER

EuroScience Open Forums provide the only Europe-wide opportunity for everyone working in or with an interest in research to meet and debate the direction that European research is taking, and the issues that research raises.

                                                                                                                                                              • -

EUROSCIENCE OPEN FORUM – AN ARENA FOR DIALOGUE AND INFLUENCE
by Carl Johan Sundberg, Karolinska Institutet, Sweden & ESOF2008 Communication Committee chair

Euroscience was founded in 1997 in order to:

Provide an open forum for debate on science and technology
Strengthen the links between science and society
Contribute to the creation of an integrated space for science and technology in Europe
Influence science and technology policies

To achieve these goals, Françoise Praderie and Robert Klapisch of the Euroscience Governing board suggested that a joint event with AAAS should be organised regularly. For various reasons this did not happen. In December of 1999 I proposed that Euroscience should organise a large, pan-European, inter-disciplinary, recurrent meeting to be first held in Stockholm 2004. The intention was to attract researchers and students from the academic world, industrialists, politicians and policy makers, journalists, teachers and the public to one meeting place. Support for the meeting was envisaged to come from foundations, grant organisations, companies and the European Commission. To retain the independence of the meeting, the goal was to be supported by many and dominated by none.

After four years of hard work to attract partners, funders, set up a programme and market the event, ESOF2004 took place in August 2004. It attracted some 1800 people from Europe and beyond including scientists, policy makers, industry and 350 journalists. Two years later, ESOF2006 was organised in Munich with over 2200 participants. The media impact around ESOF2004 and ESOF2006 was massive with close to 1000 news items in national and international media.

THE IMPORTANCE OF SCIENCE JOURNALISM IN EUROPE
by István Palugyai, Népszabadság, Hungary & ESOF2008 Communication Committee member.

Europe is behind America not only in terms of technological competitiveness, but also in the race of obtaining scientific information. Unfortunately there is a gap between the Lisbon Goals and the necessary conditions to achieve them.

The Eurobarometer ‘Europeans, Science and Technology’ survey in 2005 found that the level of scientific knowledge among Europeans is low compared to politics or sport, despite Europeans showing an interest in science. They are poorly informed about new inventions and technologies as well new scientific discoveries. Moreover 40% of Europeans claim to hardly ever or never read articles on science in newspapers, magazines or on the internet.

Therefore Europe should ‘catch up’. For improving this situation we should have to consider the media, which is the main information source concerning science. In the media we have to recognise the efforts of science journalists and science journalism.

One interpretation of the Eurobarometer results could be that there is confusion in science journalism practices and a growing tension between traditional reporting and new media.

What type of science journalists do the editors of specialist or non-specialist press, of television or of radio want?

In Budapest, on 10 November 2007, the Board of the World Federation of Science Journalists (WFSJ) met in Budapest, final day of the 2007 World Science Forum.

The previous day, its President Pallab Ghosh, science journalist at BBC, chaired a session that included Parliamentarians from Egypt, Germany, Iran and Mexico. On the same day, WFSJ board members Wilson da Silva (Australia), Jia Hepeng (China), Diran Onifade (Nigeria), Nadia El-Awady (Egypt), and Valeria Roman (Argentina) spoke at another session about the importance for Parliamentarians deciding Science and Technology issues and budgets to be accessible and open to science journalists.

With several Board members in Budapest, WFSJ took the opportunity to call a meeting of the team managing its flagship $2M SjCOOP project, a two-year mentoring scheme linking 15 experienced science journalists with 60 apprentice science journalists throughout Africa and the Middle East.

As soon as the SjCOOP team meeting finished, WFSJ Vice-President Diran Onifade flew to Dakar (Senegal) where he addressed representatives of the African Science Academies from Cameroon, Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya, Senegal, Uganda, and South Africa.

Simultaneously, Valeria Roman, WFSJ Board Member and science journalist with Clarin (Buenos Aires), flew to Madrid to elicit support for an eventual SjCOOP project in Latin America. WFSJ hopes to launch the Latin American SjCOOP during the upcoming July 2008 European Science Open Forum (ESOF), in Barcelona.
